What is a Community Foundation?

A Community Foundation is a vehicle to strengthen the communities of NW Missouri by keeping the wealth and assets right here – at home – for the benefit of local programs and causes.  There are over 700 such foundations in the United States . They act as public charities with a 501(c)3 designation from the IRS which allows donors maximum tax advantages while supporting their favorite charities.

The Community Foundation of Northwest Missouri was established in 2009 as a public charity with a 501(c)3 designation from the IRS which allows donors maximum tax advantages while supporting their favorite charities.  Our service area includes the following counties in Northwest Missouri.

How does it strengthen giving in the area?

A Community Foundation is geared toward long-term giving. It nurtures and enhances other institutions. The idea is to make the pie bigger, not to divide it further.

Community Foundations facilitate giving to local programs and activities. The Community Foundation of Northwest MO will not conduct annual fund-raising campaigns but will concentrate on bequests and estates.

How would my gift be managed?

Your gift would be placed in a permanent fund in which you may choose to grant from the principal and interest or you may choose annual net income where only the interest earned is used for grants. You can give cash, securities, or deferred gifts. It can be combined with others to meet a greater challenge, establish a new organization or provide funds for community emergencies. Your gift continues to grow, creating an ongoing legacy for the future.
